Oh man, it was when the Death Note figurines were first coming out in the US, and I was in the mall with my grandparents. I couldn’t have been more than fifteen or sixteen.
They bought me a couple things, but when I saw the Ryuk and Raito figures I gushed and begged for them because listen, I am a good child, I never went to parties or hooked up with a hundred different people a night and always helped around the house. They firmly told me no, because they were useless and would just sit around and why did I need them, they were $40 a piece, I would lose interest in them in a month.
I sulked like I have never sulked in my life. Not “booo, I didn’t get the Macbook I wanted for my birthday, I only got this stupid check for $1000”. I, at that moment, had never wanted something so badly. I curled up in the corner of the car on the way home and teared up and felt this clench in my chest. I didn’t ask for expensive things like cars and computers and necklaces made from diamonds that fell from the moons of Neptune on the third Saturday of October. I just wanted figurines. Finally we’re at the bank, about five minutes from the mall, and my gran looks back at me and she gives me this…this look, I can’t describe, and says, “I didn’t realize you wanted them this badly. You really really want them, don’t you?”
And I hiccup like an idiot and say yes, I want to collect all nine and keep them in good condition and never open them. She tells me not to cry and my grandpa to head back to the mall and go straight to the store with me and get the figures. I was still all red-eyed and sniffly when we were paying and I held them so close as we walked out to the car. You better believe I hugged the fuck out of my grandparents and those figurines (I’ve since added Near, I need the rest still) are still mint in the boxes, just aching for a shelf.
